Global employment crisis: FG to create one million jobs
Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja - 26.10.2009
To tame the number of job losses due to the effect of global economic down turn, the Federal Government has said it will create about one million jobs. Already, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Ministry of Information and Communications had reached an understanding on the need to collaborate with New Horizon, a private enterprise, to create one million jobs through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Speaking in Abuja, at the weekend, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, lamented that employment challenges had seriously been compounded by youth unemployment and underemployment in the country.
According to him, unemployment situation in Nigeria has its direct implication for the society with its manifestation in crime, youth militancy, and irregular migration abroad, among others.
Prince Kayode added that government was ready to tackle the unemployment crisis in Nigeria. He added: “Employment creation is central to the 7-point agenda of this administration on wealth creation and the attainment of Vision 20:2020”
He stated that ICT, which was an emerging economic sector, had high employment potential.
Currently, he said the sector was the fastest growing sector in Nigeria that had already provided numerous jobs for Nigerians.
He said: “This can be authenticated from the central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) report, that the share of ICT to GDP in 2006 was 7.8 per cent and this rose to 9 per cent in 2007.”
Anambra: ‘Peter Obi, Ngige no match for Soludo’
Leon Usigbe, Abuja - 26.10.2009
In spite of the apparent stiff opposition against the emergence of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, many of his co-contestants who are now rooting for him are confident that he would be the candidate to beat in the 2010 election.
The former governorship aspirants under the party are writing off the chances of candidates of other political parties in the February election, saying that the people were interested in Professor Soludo to ensure a clean break from the past.
The former aspirants who were among the teeming party faithful that hosted him to a grand reception in Awka, last Thursday, are also dismissing as insignificant, the threat of those still opposed to Soludo’s selection by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
They said they had commenced a process to sell Soludo to the people of the state, capitalising on his intimidating credentials as a former Economic Adviser to the President and CBN Governor.
One of them, Mrs Vera Nwobi, confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja that they had also decided to work to ensure that all aggrieved former aspirants were incorporated into the fold, even though as his supporters, they were not perturbed because they were confident of his victory at the poll.
Poly develops new technology for fufu production
Yekini Jimoh, Ilorin - 26.10.2009
THE Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, has again come out with yet another first. The polytechnic, which blazed the trail in the production of bread, ethanol and other confectioneries from sweet potato, has come up with another project through one of its students, Makinde Oluwatoyin Olufisayo.
Olufisayo, a Higher National Diploma (HND) II student of Food Technology Department, who just finished his final year examination, has developed a laboratory method for producing cassava flour popularly known as fufu.
Fufu, a well-known staple food is prepared locally under not-too-hygienic environment. Prior to this invention, preparation of fufu has always involved a long process that has been eliminated through the recent innovation by Makinde.
In a discussion, the Head, Food Technology Department, Mr. Gabriel Ogundele, said that the project was aimed at a quick preparation of food in every home.
Ogundele said that because of the rigour involved in the production of the food, many people find it difficult to prepare it individually at home. This, he added, informed the thought to devise a means to make it easy for people to prepare it in every home.
